Ambergris Caye is Belize's largest island (twenty five miles in length).
Approximately 35 miles by boat or plane from Belize City, Ambergris has an
engaging laid-back atmosphere. The reef is just east of the main town of San
Pedro. The white sand streets of San Pedro welcome barefoot pedestrians as well
as bicycles and golf carts. There are a host of excursions offered to diving and
snorkeling spots and to other cayes in the region, including to Blue Hole, Half
Moon Caye and Turneffe Islands, the only three coral atolls in the western

in 1802. The Garifuna are descendants of Carib peoples of the Lesser
Antilles and of Africans who had escaped from slavery. The Garifuna resisted
British and French colonialism in the Lesser Antilles until they were
defeated by the British in 1796 and resettled in the Bay Islands off the
north coast of Honduras. From there they migrated to the southern part of
present-day Belize.
